Fairy tales, like the Grimm’s Brothers and nursery rhymes like Mother Goose, were seemingly always visions of utopian worlds. Although they advocate beauty and goodness through happy endings, they also contain dark, underlying themes. My body of work is related to the theme of materialism. I hope to explore the common idea of structural realism and expose the dark side of humanity. I want to explore this topic by recontextualizing fairy tales in Western and Eastern culture because I believe fairy tales are mirrors to our over materialized society. In order to explore the theme under each rhyme and story, and establish a fairy-tale atmosphere, I have incorporated sculptural, mixed media and graphical elements within these works. I adapted them through a series of development processes. I started my work using primary sources, including photographs and observational sketches which provided me with a solid base to experiment with my chosen media further.
